415 Eastern Avenue
Avenue Furniture Showroom
GBCA was retained as heritage consultant for the adaptive reuse of this former industrial building on Eastern Avenue in Toronto. This Edwardian red brick building has been a notable feature on Eastern Avenue since its erection in 1908 as the Meter House for the Consumers’ Gas Company plant.
The Outcome
GBCA prepared a Heritage Impact Assessment and a Conservation Plan for repairs to the exterior heritage fabric. Heritage expertise was directed at the brickwork, the cast stone detailing (including a finely ornamented classical portico), and the pressed metal cornice with decorative brackets. GBCA assisted with municipal heritage approvals on behalf of the client and the architect, Turner Fleischer, and provided on site review of conservation techniques.
The interior was modernized and redesigned by Yabu Pushelberg, with a mezzanine open from the basement to the rafters of the original roof structure. The renovated 15,000 square foot building now serves as the stylish Avenue Road flagship showroom for home furnishings—the gallery-like showroom incorporates dramatic contemporary features all while maintaining the historic integrity of this landmark building.
