67 Yonge Street

Former Traders Bank Building

Located on Yonge Street, just south of King Street, the former Traders’ Bank building is no longer the tallest building in the British Commonwealth (as it was known upon completion in 1907). Nevertheless the impressive fifteen-storey building continues to mark its presence in the downtown core through the high quality of architectural design.

The Outcome

While sometimes difficult to appreciate on the narrow canyon of Yonge Street, one of the most important features of the building is the distinctive bracketed copper cornice high above the street.

GBCA was asked to provide expert advice on the restoration of the copper cornice. Beginning with a technical report, GBCA supplied the owner with detailed historical information on the material and construction techniques used in the early-twentieth century. This research was the first step in determining the appropriate course of action.

Given the heritage significance of this elaborate architectural feature, a restoration approach was devised, as opposed to removal or full-scale replacement. The logistical challenges of working high above a busy downtown street necessitated a creative, flexible strategy. GBCA recommended a staged approach, beginning on the southern portion, proceeding thoughtfully with the aid of exploratory openings, mock-ups, and on-site discussions.
