Metalwork Conservation

GBCA was retained by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to provide a comprehensive condition review and conservation plan for the metalwork found throughout the interior and exterior of this important heritage landmark. Following careful analysis of both the extant architectural features and of the historical documentation, GBCA prepared a report that included recommendations for repairs and future maintenance. Select samples were tested to determine the nature of the material finishes and measured drawings were prepared.

The Outcome

Wrought and cast iron was employed in various ways – for the columns in the main lobby, the decorative railings throughout the main circulation areas, the ornamental grilles in hallways and the Chamber, along with exterior railings and light fixtures. The most elaborate use of metal in the building was the impressive central staircase, which serves as the ceremonial access to the Legislative Chamber. This staircase, designed by H.C. Harrower, a specialist in iron from Buffalo, includes wrought and cast iron structural elements along with ornamental wrought iron and hammered steel balustrading.

All aspects of this report conformed to the International Charters and Canadian Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. The conservation approach followed the Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice of the Canadian Association of Conservation and the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators.
