The hall was erected in the mid-1870s and was used as both a courthouse and hall for a variety of municipal functions including council meetings. In 1963 with the completion of the new municipal building took place and the building was taken over by the Caledon Township Players.
The decision to widen Highway 10 from two to four lanes through the Village of Caledon in the mid-1990s, the disposition of the old Caledon Township Hall became an issue. The widened road would have been within a few feet of the front door of the building. The potential compromise in access, the accelerated deterioration due to road salts and highway traffic vibration dictated that the only option for long-term preservation of the structure would be relocation further back on the same site.
A feasibility study for the relocation of the building was conducted in 1999 and the consulting team was selected in 2002. Goldsmith Borgal & Company is the architectural advisor to the project (under the Prime Consultants Morrison Hershfield Ltd). Our work included specifications for the masonry repairs, design of the new basement facilities, and specification and oversight of the relocation.
