Chris Borgal and Sharon Vattay on hand in Victoria to accept two awards from CAHP
The Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals Awards are intended to recognize and celebrate excellence in the work of CAHP members. GBCA won awards in two of the ten award categories—“Craftsmanship” and “Preservation of a Heritage Building.”

The restoration of Birks Clock (Hamilton) won a “Craftsmanship Award,” which recognizes specialized restoration skills and expertise in traditional construction technologies. The award acknowledges the innovative partnering of a number of experts—five of whom are CAHP members. All brought their particular expertise to this unique project, which was undertaken for the City of Hamilton.

CAHP members Sharon Vattay and Carlos Morell, along with Fiona Graham (Conservator) and Darryl Fisher (Technologist) – all from GBCA - collaborated with CAHP members John Wilcox (Vitreous Glasswork) and Myros Trutiak (MST Bronze Limited) to complete the extensive restoration. The partnership with Phil Abernethy (Abernethy & Son Clockmakers) played a crucial role in the project, as did the input from Atelier Ville-Marie (Fine Art Conservators).

In the “Preservation of a Heritage Building Award” category, which honours outstanding demonstrations of the principles in restoration, GBCA’s work on 10 Toronto Street (Toronto’s Seventh Post Office) was recognized with an Award of Merit.

Award recipients were announced at a ceremony on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at the Odd Fellows Hall, Victoria, British Columbia.
